A hot air balloon is one of the oldest and at the same time most spectacular ways to fly: no engine, almost silent, just hot air lifting you and the wind carrying you. Flying in a balloon means spending an hour suspended in the sky, watching the landscape from a perspective no other aircraft can offer.

In this guide we explain how a balloon flies step by step, where you can fly in Catalonia, what the experience includes, when the best season is and how much it costs.

How a hot air balloon flies, step by step

The principle is simple: hot air is less dense than cold air and therefore floats. But the actual experience of flying a balloon has five distinct phases:

  1. Inflation. The envelope is spread on the ground and a cold-air fan fills it until it takes shape. This step takes about 15-20 minutes and is spectacular to watch.
  2. Burner ignition. The pilot fires the propane burner; the air inside heats up, the envelope stands upright and the whole rig starts to feel the lift force.
  3. Takeoff. With everything ready and passengers in the basket, one final more intense burn lifts the balloon gently. There are no jolts — the ascent is almost imperceptible at first.
  4. Steering with the wind. There is no rudder. The pilot picks between air layers at different altitudes, often moving in slightly different directions, and steers the balloon toward the desired area.
  5. Landing. After about an hour, the pilot finds an open field to land. The support car follows on the ground and meets you wherever you touch down.

What it feels like to fly

Passengers flying in a balloon in Catalonia

The sensation is surprising: no vertigo, because you move with the wind (not against it). Silence is broken only by the burner every now and then. You see tiny villages, fields like a mosaic, the sunrise light hitting the mountains. Many people tell us it is the most relaxing experience they have ever had — a unique way to see Catalonia from above.

Frequently asked questions

Is it dangerous to fly in a hot air balloon?

The hot air balloon has one of the best safety records in aviation. At Camins de Vent all pilots are certified by AESA and we never fly if weather conditions are not optimal.

Do I need to be physically fit?

No. If you can climb into a 1.2 metre high basket and stand for an hour, you can fly. Children, older people and all kinds of people fly with us.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my flight?

If conditions are not safe, the pilot will cancel and we will reschedule your flight at no cost. Safety always comes first.

How high does the balloon fly?

Usually between 300 and 1,000 metres, although at certain moments of the flight we may climb higher for a wider panoramic view.

Can I give a hot air balloon flight as a gift?

Yes, it is one of our most popular gifts. You can book the flight and hand over a gift voucher with a long validity so the recipient can choose the date that suits them best.
